This past weekend, my family and I had a great opportunity to explore New York Harbor on the retired fireboat, the “John J. Harvey”. The trip was part of City of Water Day, an event sponsored by the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance (MWA), a non-profit organization I am involved with. More than 10,000 people participated in the Day, held on Governor’s Island, which was an attendance record for the island located in the middle of the Harbor.
MWA is an alliance of more than 400 groups that “works to transform the New York and New Jersey Harbor and Waterways to make them cleaner and more accessible, a vibrant place to play, learn and work with great parks, great jobs and great transportation for all.” Emergency preparedness is an issue on MWA’s agenda for two reasons: First, the harbor is part of the region’s disaster response (the “John J. Harvey” came out of retirement to play a central role on 9/11 — in evacuating people and responding to the fire). And second, there is always the a central role on 9/11 — in evacuating people and responding to the fire). And second, there is always the potential of a serious hurricane in the region.
