A Citizen’s Eye View of Public Preparedness

Jeff Levi (Trust For America’s Health) — “What Should We Tell The Public?”/National Preparedness Month

September 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Jeff Levi is Executive Director of the Trust For America’s Health, a non-profit, non-partisan health policy organization, which does a lot of excellent work on public preparedness. Each year, the group publishes a widely-covered and very helpful report, “Ready or Not? Protecting the Public’s Health from Disease, Disasters, and Bioterrorism” which grades each state’s readiness for major health emergencies. Their website is: healthyamericans.org.

In this daily segment of “What Should We Tell The Public?” (for National Preparedness Month), he urges that citizens check whether their workplaces and children’s schools have emergency plans. But Levi adds that the public also needs to ask their elected officials at the local, state and national level to make sure they are investing in and setting up the systems that will facilitate a community’s response during disasters.
