Israel is in the midst of Turning Point 2, the most extensive civilian preparedness drill in the nation’s history.
At 10:00 this morning, sirens sounded on every street in the country signalling the drill. Mock emergency television messages were broadcast on television. School children went into bomb shelters where they discussed emergency procedures.
Turning Point 2 has already produced an early lesson for the Israelis. It turns out that a number of sirens could not be heard, including in parts of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv, which officials said they will correct by installing new sirens by the end of year.
Though the U.S. does not face the threat which Israel does, it is my strong belief that we should be doing some kind of societal drilling as well. We cannot expect the American public to embrace preparedness or actually become prepared for emergencies without any type of practice. Â
