Parker and Harwin are the impresarios (or as they might say it, imprep-e-sarios) behind the terrific Cross Blog of the Oregon Trail Red Cross.

In the segment, we discuss how I got involved in the issue of citizen preparedness, my activities as a member of the CERT program in New York City, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano’s recent speech recommending that Americans ask “What’s Our Plan?” in their community, and the Flu.Gov Citizen H1N1 Video PSA contest. The 10-minute interview comes at the beginning of the show (audio file here).

Haja, who himself is a member of the CERT from his West Harlem neighborhood, is doing a series of segments on public preparedness. We discussed our experiences as a CERT members, encouraged listeners to consider volunteering for the program, and explained some basic things New Yorkers should know and do when it comes to preparing themselves and their families. 

It can be a great challenge to get the media to cover citizen readiness BEFORE a disaster. So, I give WHCR and Haja a lot credit for dedicating so much time to the issue on air. 

It was also a chance to bring my two daughters (below) to the WHCR studios which are located on the campus of the City College of New York.
