My son's got one of those seat cushion hats (every kid does). I have my doubts about their efficacy if the ceiling falls in. Also, I think overall individual preparedness here in Japan is overstated (or overestimated), especially among young people (the war and post-war generation remembers real crisis). Where Japanese are, for the most part, much better prepared than anyone is in the area of home disaster kits. Clothes, water, batteries, etc. We have three or four grab-and-go kits in the house, and though we live in a one-story house, from which I presume we'd be able to salvage quite a bit of stuff after The Big One for which Japanese are mostly preparing, people in high-rise buildings won't have that luxury.
