Tweeps Being Asked To #ThankACopThur On Twitter & On The Beat

August 5th, 2010 · 4 Comments

Mike Ellis from the Emergency Comunications Network decided yesterday to try to launch “Thank A Cop Thursdays” (hashtag: #ThankACopThur) on Twitter. He started tweeting the idea out with help from law enforcement social media expert, Lauri Stevens (@lawscomm).

This afternoon, Ellis gave me an update on the effort:

“The response to #ThankACopThur was immediate and continues today. I sincerely have lost track of how many times #ThankACopThur has been RTd and shared with others in the Twitterverse. In addition to numerous tweets from tweeps in the United States, my friend @lawscomm told me that she has seen #ThankACopThur tweets from the Netherlands, Canada and the UK.”

Thank you John. I appreciate you taking interest in what we are doing.

I echo Mike, John. #thankacopthur is a brilliant idea and hopefully will help people realize that cops should be appreciated more. Unfortunately, more cops are being killed in the line of duty this year over 40% more than last. They put their lives on the line every single day they put on their uniform. I think my friend Mike Ellis has started something and it’s a wonderful thing. Thank you both.

As someone who spent many years working in law enforcement, I think this is a great idea, and a wonderful initiative. I know I used to joke that cops should have t-shirts that say “Thanks for Nothing” because nothing happened (a good thing). This just seems a great avenue to say thanks. My first one went out to a Chief of Police I worked under, and who I still consider one of the best leaders I have ever met- Chief Robert White of the Louisville Metro PD.
